COMMUNICATIONS from the Bishop

No. 931          Diocese of Marbel, Philippines                   30 May 2017

Governor Steve C. Solon, Sarangani Province, met with priests, 29 May 2017, Bishop’s Kiosk, Koronadal City.  Present 46: 27 priests, 2 deacons, a Claretian Brother and 16 seminarians in Theology.

Main purpose was to secure priests’ cooperation in the Sarangani’s campaign against terrorism.

Terrorism was condemned by the Mindanao Bishops in their statement “Pursue What Leads to Peace”, 26 May 2017.  It was issued in relation to Marawi’s attack by the Maute Group and declaration of Martial Law by President Rodrigo RoaDuterte on 23 May 2017.

The Bishops said, “we condemned the terrorist acts that have caused the loss of many innocent lives, the burning of homes, public buildings, including a Protestant school dormitory and a Catholic cathedral.”

Further, “we condemn the unconscionable kidnapping of teachers and Church personnel.”

Finally, “in the strongest terms we condemn terrorism in its various forms.  It is an ideology that is totally against the tenets of any religion of peace… Terrorism distorts and falsifies the true meaning of any religion.  It destroys harmonious relationships among peoples of different faiths.  It creates a world of suspicion and prejudice, of hatred and hostility.

Campaign against terrorism is the duty of every believer – in God, Allah, Adwata, etc.

Bishop exhorted the priests to fully support any campaign against terrorism.  A PLAN is needed.  The Bishop will call for a planning workshop to strategize our response to terrorism.
