COMMUNICATIONS from the Bishop

No. 914          Diocese of Marbel, Philippines                   14 February 2017

  1. MINING’S CONTRIBUTION TO PHILIPPINE ECONOMY

Ms. Solita Collas – Monsod in her column “Get Real” (PDI, 11 Feb. 2017, p. A12) states that the contribution of mining to the Philippine economy is insignificant.  She writes:

“Mining industry statistics (as of Dec. 15, 2016) show that the gross value added in mining averaged about 0.65 percent of GDP for 2012 – 2016, and that includes nonmetallic mining.”

Exports?  “The same data indicate that the mining industry, both metallic and nonmetallic, accounts for about 5 percent of total exports.”

“Employment?  The industry account for about 0.6 percent of total employment.”

“Definitely not a mortal blow.  And think of the benefit to the Filipino people, now and in the future.”
