No. 893 Diocese of Marbel, Philippines 15 September 2016
1. OUR LADY OF SORROWS
September 15 is Memorial of Our Lady of Sorrows. We remember today Mary’s sorrows in her association with Jesus Christ.
“By the 14th century, the faithful identified seven sorrows of Mary.” (Ordo, 2016)
These are: (1) Simeon’s prophecy (Lk. 2: 34-35); (2) flight into Egypt (Mt. 2: 13-21); (3) 3-day separation from Jesus (Lk. 2: 41-50); (4) her meeting with Christ on the way to calvary; (5) the crucifixion; (6) removal of Christ’s body from the cross; (7) Christ’s burial (Mt. 27: 31-61; Mk. 15: 20-47; Lk. 23: 25-56; Jh. 19: 17-42). In 1817,Pius VII extended the feast of Our Lady of Sorrows to the whole Church. (cf. “Our Lady of Sorrows”, 1978 Catholic Almanac, p. 300).
Let us patiently bear our sorrows during this state of national emergency on account of lawless violence. And pray we must for all the victims of violence here and abroad.
