No. 883 Diocese of Marbel, Philippines 20 June 2016
Sonora Smart Dodd initiated celebration of Father’s day, 19 June 1910, YMCA, Spokane, Washington, United States of America.
She heard a sermon about Mother’s Day in 1909. Why not Father’s Day? Her father, a civil war veteran was a single parent who raised six children. Father’s Day observed in 62 countries, from Argentina to Venezuela.
“Honour your father and your mother so that you may have a long life in the land that Yahweh your God has given to you.” (Ex. 20: 12; cf. Eph. 6: 2-3).
“Honour your father and your mother, as Yahweh, your God has commanded you, so that you may have long life and may prosper in the land that Yahweh your God gives to you” (Deut. 5: 16).
“Do your duty to your father and mother” (Mt. 15: 4; cf. Mk. 10: 20; Lk. 18: 21).
We honor fathers for their loving service and courageous shepherding of family members as well as for faithful stewardship of family resources – money and other possessions.
HAPPY FATHER’S DAY!
