“Gaudium et Spes”: The ultimate partnership of married life and love has been established by the Creator and qualified by His laws, and is rooted in the conjugal covenant of irrevocable personal consent (GS. 48).
“True love between husband and wife” (GS, 49) involves a mutual gift of self, which is to include and integrate the sexual dimension and affectivity according to the divine plan (cf. GS, 48-49).
“Marriage and conjugal love ‘are by nature oriented toward the begetting and educating of children’ (GS, 50).”
Marriage is grounded on Christ “Christ the Lord ‘comes into the lives of married Christians through the Sacrament of Matrimony’ (GS, 48) and remains with them.”
“In this way the couple…builds up the Body of Christ and is a domestic Church (cf. Lumen Gentium, 11).”
- Blessed Pope Paul VI
“Encyclical Humane Vitae”. Pope Paul VI writes: “married love…requires of husband and wife the full awareness of their obligations in the matter of responsible parenthood… (HV, 10)” meaning “the intrinsic link between conjugal love and the generation of life.”
“Apostolic Exhortation ‘Evangelii Nuntiandi’” No. 71. “One cannot fail to stress the evangelizing action of the family”. As domestic Church “there should be found in every Christian family the various aspects of the entire Church…the family ought to be a place where the Gospel is transmitted and from which the Gospel radiates.” (Bishop encourages every Christian family to have a Bible and conduct weekly bible session: reading, reflection-sharing, responding to God’s Word.)

“Familiaris Consortio”. “In matrimony and in the Family a complex of interpersonal relationships is set up – married life, fatherhood and motherhood, filiation and fraternity – through which each human person is introduced into the ‘human family’ and into the ‘family of God’ which is the Church” (FC, 15).
- Pope Benedict XVI
Encyclical ‘Deus Caritas Est’…”marriage based on exclusive and definitive love becomes the icon of the relationship between God and his people and vice versa. God’s way of loving becomes the measure of human love” (DCE, 11).
Encyclical ‘Caritas in Veritate’. “It is thus becoming a social and even economic aspect…to hold up to future generation the beauty of marriage and the family, and the fact that these institutions correspond to the deepest needs and dignity of the person. In view of this, States are called to enact policies promoting the centrality and the integrity of the family, founded on marriage between a man and a woman,…and to assume responsibility for its economic and fiscal needs, while respecting its essentially relational character” (CIV, 44).
- Pope Francis
Encyclical ‘Lumen Fidei’. “The first setting in which faith enlightens the human city is the family (LF, 52). Apostolic Exhortation ‘Evangelii Gaudium’. “…the indispensable contribution of marriage to society transcends the feelings and monetary needs of the couple” (EG, 66).
CHAPTER III. The Christian Teaching on the Family.
- Marriage in the Order of Creation and the Fullness of the sacrament. “The order of redemption illuminates and fulfills that of creation. Natural marriage is fully understood according to its realization in the Sacrament of Matrimony.”
- The Indissolubility and Fruitfulness of the Conjugal union. “The faithfulness of God to the covenant…is the basis for the indissolubility of marriage.” ‘What God has joined together, let not man put asunder’ (Mt. 19: 6; Mk. 10: 9).
- The Goods of the Family. “Marriage is a partnership of the whole of life and which is ordered by its nature to the good of the spouses and the procreation and education of offspring’ (CIC, canon 1055, §1). Goods of spouses’ are: union, openness to life, fidelity and indissolubility” (cf. 47, Report, 2015 Synod).
- “The faithfulness of the couple, in a full sense, is spiritual – living signs of Matrimony; source of life for Christian community and world.”
- The truth and beauty of the family. “First experience of ecclesial communion between persons grows and develops in the family.” One “learns endurance, joy of work, fraternal love, generous forgiveness, above all divine worship in prayer and offering of one’s life” (Catechism of Catholic Church, 1654).
CHAPTER IV. Towards the Ecclesial Fullness of the Family.
- Intimate Bond Between the Church and family.
“The blessing and responsibility of a new family …involve the couple’s willingness to be advocates and promoters, within the Christian community, of the basic covenant between aman and a woman. In society, the willingness to beget children, to protect the weak and to live a life in common, involves a responsibility that should be acknowledged and appreciated.”
- The Grace of Conversion and Fulfillment
“The Church remains close to couples whose marital relationship has degenerated to the point of separation.” Church “to accompany spouses in periods of suffering.” “Church’s pastoral care for faithful who are living together, only civilly married, divorced and remarried. She seeks the grace of conversion for them.”
- Mercy: the Core of Revelation.
All are in need of mercy, “with the merciful heart of Jesus, the Church must draw near and guide the weakest…by restoring confidence and hope. Mercy is ‘the core of the revelation of Jesus Christ’” (Misericordiae Vultus, face of Mercy, 25). ‘God’s sovereignty shines forth in his mercy; a mercy always faithful to his very being, which is love (cf. 1 Jh. 4: 8), and to his covenant.’ ‘It is precisely in his mercy that God manifests his omnipotence’ (St. Thomas Aquinas, Summa, II-II, q. 30, art. 4).
