1. JUBILEE YEAR OF MERCY

Pope Francis announced on 10 July 2015 the Jubilee Year of Mercy from 8 December 2015 to 20 November 2016.  Vatican II concluded 8 December 1965.  Aim: to afford the faithful the opportunity to receive divine mercy through the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

A Holy Door is to be opened during this year.  People who enter the Cathedral through this Door will gain a plenary indulgence, subject to certain conditions: confession, communion and prayer for the pope’s intention.  The plenary indulgence will remit (erase) all temporal punishment due to sin.

Jubilee Year, in Jewish tradition, aimed to restore equity.  Pope Benedict VIII started the Jubilee Year in 1300, to be celebrated every 100 years.  In 1475, the interval was reduced to 25 years.  Pope St. John Paul II proclaimed a Jubilee Year in 1983 – 1950 years after Jesus’ death.
