Last 29 April 2015 a meeting on peace in the fishing industry took place at Sto. Niño Parish, Bula, General Santos City.
- Illegal, undocumented, unreported cases in the fishing industry;
- Minimal or non-compliance of government policies and regulations which are rigid or too demanding – although laws are important;
- Help resolve the existing conflict between the CITRA MINA group of companies and the workers.
The meeting provided opportunities to understand maritime laws and to have a glimpse of the tuna industry issue.
It had also strengthened the participants’ justice and peace advocacy.
Participants: Mr. Marfenio Tan and Mr. Dario Lauron representing the tuna industry and the Parish Social Action Center (PSAC) representatives, General Santos City, and Fr. Gillarme “Joy” Peliño, DSAC Director.
PSAC Bula convened the meeting. Thanks to Fr. Ernesto Bendita, parish priest of Bula and Vicar Forane of Metro Dadiangas Area (MEDA). (Reported by: GJP)
