  1. EARTH DAY: APRIL 22ND

Senator Gaylord Nelson founded Earth Day.  The 1st Earth Day was held on 22 April 1970.  Around 20 million Americans participated in massive coast-to-coast rallies for health and sustainable environment.  Thousands of colleges and universities organized against the deterioration of the environment due to oil spills, polluting factories and power plants, raw sewage, toxic dumps, pesticides, loss of wilderness, extinction of wild life, etc.

The first Earth Day led to the creation of the United States’ Environmental Protection Agency and the passage of the Clean Air, Clean Water and Endangered Species Acts.

Earth Day became global in 1990.  Two hundred million (200M) in 141 countries took part.  Theme: “Recycling.”  The 1990 Earth Day paved the way for the 1992 United Nations Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
