COMMUNICATIONS from the Bishop

No.   808        Diocese of Marbel, Philippines                    20 February 2015

Harana started at 4:15am.  Mass, 4:45am, after Fr. Joan Paez impromptu advanced homily.

Presider and homilist – Bishop.  Concelebrants: Fr. Romeo Buenaobra, Fr. Jo-an Paez, Fr. Ronald Plomillo, Fr. Ruben Ocino, Fr. Jefil Callego and Fr. Joemer Candido.

Bishop’s homily.  Is. 58: 1-9. Fasting and lying in sackcloth and ashes are ways of doing penance.  A better form of fasting is doing justice and acts of charity.

Resp. Ps.: Ps. 51: 3-4, 5-6, 18-19.  “a broken humbled heart, O God, you will not scorn.”

Gospel: Mt. 9: 14-15.  “Wedding guests do not go in mourning” while “the groom is with them.”  But “when the groom is taken away, then they will fast.”

Pope Francis’ Lenten Message, published 4 October 2014 speaks of Lent as “a time of renewal for all.”

Today, writes Pope Francis, in the midst of world-wide sufferings “our heart grows cold”.  “This attitude of indifference has taken on global properties, to the extent we can speak of a globalization of indifference.”

To overcome this indifference, “we shall engage in the formation of the heart.”  He exhorts us: ‘Fac cor nostrum secundum cor turum’ – ‘make our hearts like yours.’

Having a heart like Christ means (1) praying with the Church on earth and the Church in heaven. – the Church is a communion of saints; (2) doing acts of charity to our neighbors in need; (3) personal conversion – a broken, humbled heart…you will not scorn.

Pray that our national leaders, the legislators, the peace panel, the AFP-PNP and MILF would humbled themselves and be converted so that peace based on justice, love, truth and freedom – may reign in our land!

World Youth Day (WYD) this 2015 will be on Palm Sunday, March 29th, at the diocesan level, world-wide.

This is in preparation for the WYD in Krakow, Poland in 2016.

Theme: “Blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.” (Mt. 5:8)

 1. The desire for happiness

Blessed or happy occurs nine times in Jesus’ sermon on the mount (cf. Mt. 5: 1-12)

“This search for happiness is shared by people of all times and all ages.

Desire for happiness is fulfilled in Christ.

2. Blessed are the pure in heart…

Heart in Hebrew is “the centre of emotions, thoughts and intentions of the human person.”

Pure in Greek is “Katharos”.  Basically it means clean, pure, undefiled.

Happiness “born of a pure heart” consists in right relationships.  “We need to show a healthy concern for creation, for the purity of our air, water and food”, above all…to protect the purity of what is most precious of all: our heart and our relationships.  “This human ecology will help us to breathe the pure air that comes from beauty, from true love and from holiness.”

True love is characterized by “beauty, communion, fidelity and responsibility.”

 3. for they shall see God.

We see God by the way of prayer – an “intimate friendship with the one who makes us feel loved.”

We see God “in the sacrament of reconciliation.  A privileged opportunity to encounter that divine mercy which purifies us and renews our hearts.”

We encounter the Lord by frequently reading sacred Scripture – God’s Word.

Fraternal life will help you better to know the Lord and yourselves.”

 4. On the Way to Krakow

“This year’s World Youth Day begins the final stage of preparations for the great gathering of young people from around the world in Krakow in 2016.”
