Tri-people youth leaders of Polomolok, South Cotabato gathered in Barangay Sulit, Polomolok for the YLS on Augsut 13-16, 2009.
The Interfaith Youth Leadership Summit (YSL) was a four-day stay-in activity. It was conducted jointly by LGU Polomolok, Center for Moderate Muslim (CMM), NACTAG, 27IB, 10ID in cooperation with National Youth Council, OMA, DepEd, etc.
Main objectives: 1) importance of peace and order and; 2) good leadership.
Speakers from the Catholic religion: Fr. Ricardo Pajarillo, Jr, “ Fundamentals of Christianity and Christian Culture and Tradition”, Bishop Dinualdo Gutierrez, “Christian perspective on Inter-Religious Dialogue” ; and Fr. Romeo Intengan, SJ, “Teachings of Jesus Christ on Peace and Order and Good Leadership”.
Bishop Dinualdo said that before Vatican II dialogue was not used in the Church. In 1965 Vatican II came out with the Declaration on the Relationship of the Church to Non-Christian Religions “Nostra Aetate” (In Our Time).
NA declares “all peoples comprise a simple community and have a common origin” – God (n. 1).
We accept what is “truly and holy” in other religions. Respect their “ways of conduct and of life, rules and teachings”. So the Church exhorts us to prudently and lovingly, through dialogue and collaboration with the followers of other religions, and in witness of Christian faith and life, acknowledge, preserve and promote the spiritual and moral goods found among these men, as well as the values in their society and culture” (n. 2)
The Church exhorts us to be actively engaged in inter-religious dialogue.
This engagement has four levels:
1st. Dialogue of life. A neighborly encounter of respect and hospitality.
2nd. Dialogue of Collaboration. Cooperation in social concerns, such as human rights and environmental protection.
3rd. Dialogue of Theological Discussion. Study of each other’s beliefs and spiritual values.
4th. Dialogue of Religious Experience: joint prayers, shared reflections, participation in liturgical celebrations, etc.
The Bishops-Ulama Conference founded in 1996 is a venue for these 4 levels of dialogue. Muslim religious leaders, protestant bishops and pastors and Mindanao Catholic Bishops usually come together every quarter, pray together, discuss issues together and work together towards peace in Mindanao.
Some 220 youth leaders participated in the YSL. (note. Bp. Dinualdo delivered his talk in Tagalog, answered questions in Visaya)
