BISHOPS-ULAMA CONFERENCE’S TRIPARTITE COMMISSION MEETS

The Tripartite Commission (Board) of the BUC met at Casa Leticia, Davao City on 10 October 2008.

Decisions:
1. Go on with the 35th BUC General Assembly, Jolo, Sulu, 19-20 November 2008.
2. BUC to LEAD in the peace process as requested by Pres. Gloria Macapagal Arroyo. BUC will initiate and facilitate consultations at the community level. BUC with its Christian and Muslim members are committed to peace since Islam and Christianity are religions of peace. BUC has been in existence since 1996 and has initiated Muslim-Christian Youth camps, Mindanao Week of Peace and peace advocacies. Catholic bishops will assume leadership role because at present the Ulama are not well organized and the protestants have two big groupings: NCCP and UCCP. The Catholic bishops in their consultation process will adopt the MSPC process and structures. BUC will meet with community leaders – Muslim, Christian and Lumad – in Jolo during the 35th BUC General Assembly.
3. A letter of appeal on the present conflict was approved. Contents: a) spare civilians’ lives; b) more assistance needed – food, medicines, building materials, etc.; c) healing program for traumatized by the violent conflict. Tap local guidance counselors.

Present. Catholics: Arch. Capalla, Bp Gutierrez and Bp. De la Peña. Arch Ledesma was absent. Protestants: Bp. Gomez (emeritus), Bp. Bustamante and Pastora Bahandi. A 4th member is not identified.
