The 12th Ordinary General Assembly of the Synod of Bishops began on Sunday, October 5th. Pope Benedict XVI presided over the Eucharistic celebration in the Basilica of St. Paul’s Outside-the Walls. First time the opening Mass was held outside St. Peter’s. This is in line with the year-long Jubilee celebration of the bi-millennium of St. Paul’s birth. Synod will end on 26 October in the Vatican Basilica of St. Peter.
Theme: “The word of God in the Life and the Mission of the Church”.
Delegates: 253 from 113 Episcopal conferences, 13 “sui juris” (On one’s own right) Eastern Catholic Churches, 25 dicasteries of Roman Curia, and the Union of Superiors General. Also present will be 41 experts from 21 countries, and 37 auditors from 26 countries. The experts includes six women and the auditors 19.
Secretary General of the Synod is Arch. Nikola Eterovic.
Representatives from Protestants and Orthodox Churches will be attending, too (VIS, 3 Oct.)
